One of the most spacious and comfortable retreats in Southeast Alaska, The Lodge at Whale Pass is set on the shores of a peaceful bay in the remote town of Whale Pass on Prince of Wales Island. Close to the Tongass National Forest, the surrounding mountains, glaciers, rivers, lakes, and caves, provide the perfect environment for guests to enjoy a wide range of Alaskan adventure activities. Such diverse terrain supports an abundance of wildlife and guests can enjoy spotting whales, bears, eagles, and wolves, among many other species.
Accessed by floatplane from Ketchikan Airport, the 45-minute transfer starts any stay in style. The Lodge boasts spacious public spaces, and the Great Room offers comfortable sofas and chairs, a warming fire and fabulous views of the bay and forest. This is a lovely place to relax, with well-stocked bars for guests to help themselves to tea, coffee, snacks, and other beverages. For more formal indoor entertainment, the Recreation Room has a pool table, darts, table tennis and DVDs to watch, along with its own refreshments bar and rock fireplace.
Rooms and suites are well-appointed, spacious, and comfortable, with views over the forest or bay. Expect large comfortable beds, premium linens, climate control, and ensuite bathroom with hairdryer and bathing products. Trade up to a suite for a private sitting area. The accommodation includes either Twin or King beds to suit both couples and families.
All food is included, and the dining room has the relaxed vibe of an upscale local restaurant. Dishes are created from the bountiful fresh fish and seafood available here, along with seasonal local produce.
A stay at the Lodge also includes all activities and an Adventure Menu is provided for guests to personalise their own itineraries. All activities are led by Alaskan experts, naturalists, and adventure-sport enthusiasts. Surrounded by such diverse landscapes and natural features, the opportunities are endless and include superlative fishing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, forest hiking, glacier viewing, caving, beachcombing and more. Home to iconic wildlife that includes whales, otters, bears, eagles and wolves, the wildlife encounters here will live long in the memory.
All equipment and clothing are provided in the well-stocked Gear Room or for those going fishing, from the Tackle Shack. Please note that there is no cell signal at the Lodge, but a satellite service allows for telephone and Wi-Fi connectivity for basic activities such as email checking.
After such action-packed days, guests can revive themselves in the onsite spa, with a massage, a sauna and a soak in a hot tub overlooking Whale Pass Bay. Drinks and snacks can be delivered to you as you soak or steam. There’s also a beachside firepit to watch the sun go down, while making new friends and toasting delicious s’mores.
