Occupying one of the best locations in Los Angeles, Shutters on the Beach overlooks the golden sands of Santa Monica Bay and the sparkling surf of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel was first opened in 1933 and its white and grey clapboard exterior is one of the city’s most famous façades. Frequented by Hollywood A-Listers, locals and tourists alike, the hotel was renovated in 2005, by Michael S. Smith, the designer behind the Obama White House. With two large fireplaces, grand piano, comfortable sofas, huge windows overlooking the beach and walls lined with David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein originals, the Shutters lobby is warm and inviting. There is a relaxed ocean beach house vibe, and the discerning staff are on hand 24-hours a day for your every need.
The 198 spacious rooms and suites have the same Hamptons-inspired coastal cottage décor as the rest of the hotel. Expect lots of blues and whites, premium linens, white wooden shutters, hardwood flooring, handwoven rugs, tastefully curated art, walnut desks, Smart TV and Bluetooth speaker system, free Wi-Fi, and nautical themed books. The generously sized ensuite bathrooms feature walk-in shower, flat-screen TV, and most feature an oversized bathtub with massage jets. For the best views, opt for an Ocean View Room with sliding shutter doors out onto a private balcony. For more space and privacy, opt for a Studio King Room with a separate living area, sofa bed and outdoor patio, ideal for entertaining. Or for direct access to the sands, check in to an Ocean Front King Room located in the Beach House. The suite accommodation retains the residential feel and guests can enjoy a choice of ocean view, along with large separate living rooms. Located in the Beach House, Ocean Front Suites offer uninterrupted beach views or for two-bedroom beachside living, book a Pacific View or Beach House Suite.
The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, 1 Pico, showcases coastal Californian cuisine and ranks alongside some of LA’s best destination restaurants. A more casual experience is available at the Coast Beach Café & Bar, with all-day indoor-outdoor dining accompanied by a side of celebrity-spotting. For drinks, snacks, meetings, happy hours, and live entertainment, hang out in the ultimate Living Room, located in the hotel’s lobby. A home from home space of comfortable couches, ocean views and roaring fires.
The hotel’s glamorous seafront terrace is home to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers and private cabanas. To keep in top physical shape there is a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. Or head to the luxe ONE Spa to revive mind, body, and soul. Guests can also hire bicycles for a ride along the Strand Beach Path, a 35km route from Temescal Canyon to Redondo Beach. Nestled between Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach, Shutters is around a 20-minute walk to the shops, cafés, and restaurants of Third Street Promenade and a 30-minute drive to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive. Depending on traffic, Universal Studios and Los Angeles Airport are around a 30-45-minute drive away.
