The lodge is just 40-miles from the Californian border and around a 5-hour drive from Portland.
Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge has been welcoming guests since 1970. Named after the first inhabitants of the area, the Tututni Native Americans, the name translates as ‘the people of the place by the river.’ Natural materials reign supreme and the lodge has been built using local cedar and fir woods, with slate hearths and river rock fireplaces. Grass cloth walls are a tribute to the Tututni’s plant weaving skills and soft wool, cashmere and linen soft furnishings add a touch of elegance and style. Asian accents also infuse the lodge with a wonderful sense of calm and tranquillity.
The service is fabulous, and the lodge has maintained the Tututni’s custom of greeting everyone by name. There’s even a friendly lodge cat and Labrador to assure a warm welcome. Bordered by evergreens, the lodge’s lush velvety lawn leads down to the Rogue River and the rooms here are named after points of interest, such as a fishing hole or pioneer homestead, along its course. Guests can also choose to stay in one of two suites or three standalone houses.
Rooms are comfortably furnished with a restful neutral color palette, seating area, river views and French doors opening onto a patio or balcony. Ensuite bathrooms have underfloor heating, premium bath products and large fluffy towels. Book a Deluxe King Room for a fireplace and outdoor soaking tub overlooking the river, or the Chinook Suite includes a granite and cherry wood kitchen, lounge with wood burning stove, private furnished deck, covered outdoor soaking tub and outdoor shower. For families, the Steelhead Suite includes a sofa bed and can sleep up to four guests.
Of the three standalone houses, River House features two master King bedrooms with private decks and outdoor soaking tubs, comfortable lounge with wood burning stove, kitchen, and barbeque. For added historic interest, Garden House dates to the 1930s and was the original house on the property. While it’s been given a 21st century makeover, it still retains some of the charming original features. Sleeping up to four guests, there is a King and Queen bedroom on different floors, kitchen, bathroom, deck with barbeque and soaking tub for two. Or for the best river views in the house, book Osprey Bend with its deluxe interiors, open plan living, wraparound deck and three ensuite King bedrooms, sleeping up to six.
As the Tututni enjoyed bringing people together, the wonderful gourmet dinners are served at communal tables, after guests have enjoyed a selection of hors d’oeuvres on the terrace. While breakfast is served throughout the year, only limited dining is offered during the off-season from November to April.
The lodge can arrange riverside spa treatments, fishing, jet boating and water activities such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Close to the Siskiyou Forest and the Oregon Coast Trail, there is plenty of hiking in the area and while there is much to see and do in the vicinity, the lodge has a wonderful Do-Nothing policy, encouraging guests to nap, read, daydream and simply immerse themselves in the natural beauty and comfortable surroundings of Tu Tu’ Tun
