Venture outside of Iceland’s trendy capital to a landscape dotted with rumbling volcanoes, gloopy mud craters and spouting geysers. Whilst civilisation seems to have forgotten the outer reaches of Iceland, mother nature has not. From north to south, cinematic vistas, extraordinary landscapes and epic experiences await at every turn. Adventurers, listen up.
There are few places in the world where the awesome power of nature is so starkly laid bare. Just as nature intended, its landscapes are continually merging and morphing, with each season bringing a newly snow dusted peak or a freshly crusted lava field. From a long hot soak in the Blue Lagoon to an invigorating dip in the Atlantic, Iceland is a country of contrasts.
From kayaking between icebergs or snorkelling with puffins to spotting whales or coming face to face with seals, waterborne activities in Iceland abound. Back on dry land, hurtle across the lunar-like landscapes in a 4x4, soar above them in a helicopter or whizz across a glacier on a snowmobile for an adrenaline fuelled adventure. When the timing’s right, the lucky few can grab a front row seat to the greatest light show on earth, the aurora borealis.
Getting off the beaten track in Iceland makes for a truly unforgettable trip. Switch off from the outside world on a visit to the sparsely populated Flatey Island or hole up in Hotel Budir, a remote hideaway sat in the middle of a lava field. Hunker down in a remote fishing town at the cosy Hotel Egilsen, submerge in a geothermal spring or explore the Snaefellsnes peninsula on the back of an Icelandic horse. Put simply, there’s nowhere else we’d rather find ourselves in hot water.
