Situated just outside Yamashiro a small spa town known for its onsens and healing waters lies the beautiful Beniya Mukayu. Situated around a beautiful wild garden each of the 17 rooms have lovely peaceful views, of the garden and town of Yamashiro in the distance. The design of the property uses a unique blend of natural materials to give a stunning blend of textures and warm tones. The paired back design adds to the sense of relaxation with the uncluttered spaces providing an oasis of calm.
Each of the 17 rooms are based on the traditional Ryokan style of rooms with tatami and equipped with private terraces and enormous open air baths in which to relax. There is also the choice of western rooms that provide a fantastic mix of traditional Japanese design with the benefit of a separate bedrooms with western style beds. The suites provide even more space with large living rooms and spacious terraces on which to relax and enjoy the surrounding views.
There is one main dining room at Beniya Mukayu providing mouth watering traditional Japanese cuisine with Kaiseki dinner and Japanese or western breakfast which all looks as incredible as it tastes, with the importance of presentation playing a large role in the menu. It is not only your palate that is pampered here as the spa is fantastic and offers a number of unique treatments which have been developed especially for the Ryokan and complemented by the luxurious bath products available in each room.
Alongside the spa there are two public onsens for men and women with indoor and outdoor baths, a fully stocked library and tea house in the garden for private tea ceremonies.
When to visit
There is yoga available every morning for 45 minutes which is wonderful. In the warmer months it is performed on the terrace surrounded by the garden. Really do make the effort to go - it is an amazing experience.
