Things to Do on a Greece Family Holiday
One of the reasons that Greece is such a good destination for family holidays is the variety of activities on offer. Go on outdoor adventures like sailing and hiking, visit cultural attractions and ancient ruins, or relax at Greece’s many idyllic beaches—there’s no shortage of things to do in Greece with your family.
Best Places to Visit on a Luxury Family Holiday to Greece
Deciding where to go on holiday in Greece with your family can be a daunting task. Luckily, our travel experts have curated a list of the best places to visit during your break - from the best islands for families to unmissable attractions on the mainland.
-
Athens
Athens is a popular starting point for family holidays to Greece, with international flights arriving daily, but it’s also worth staying to explore. Kids and adults alike can step back in time at world-famous archaeological sites like the Parthenon and the Acropolis, while museums such as the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Hellenic Children’s Museum make history engaging for younger ages. Families can also enjoy wandering through Plaka, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, with its lively restaurants, cafés and shops set against the backdrop of the Acropolis.
Greece expert and Travel Specialist Milly Darnell says: “Athens is the ideal Greek destination for families because it provides ancient history, fun neighbourhoods and lots of family fun activities including cooking classes, Olympic-focussed tours, and nearby coastal towns."
-
The Peloponnese
The Peloponnese is a region that blends history, authentic villages, and seaside relaxation for families. History buffs of any age can visit historical sites like Sparta, Mycenae, and Olympia. Families with older children and teens will appreciate the buzzy town of Kalavryta for its hiking in the spring and summer or you can visit its world-class ski resorts in the winter. In the warmer months, the region’s long sandy beaches and upscale coastal resorts make it a standout destination for a luxury family beach holiday.
-
Crete
Crete is Greece’s largest island and offers variety for families with children of all ages. History comes alive at Knossos, Europe’s oldest city, while food lovers can enjoy the region’s rich gastronomic offerings. Active families can try water sports along the Aegean coast, and resorts here are particularly family-friendly, many with waterparks, kids’ clubs and spacious villas. One of our favourite hotels in Greece includes Daios Cove hotel, with its private beach, spa and exclusive Scott Dunn Explorers Kids Club.
-
Corfu
The Greek island Corfu combines cultural experiences with family fun on a more intimate scale than Crete. Families can stroll through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, enjoy seafood dinners by the harbour, or spend the day at Aqualand Water Park with slides for all ages. Boat trips to nearby Paxos and Antipaxos are a popular family outing, offering clear waters for swimming and traditional tavernas for relaxed waterfront meals.
-
Cyclades Islands
The Cyclades are a cluster of islands perfect for families seeking sun, beaches and hospitable locales. In the Cyclades, Naxos has a relaxed, family-friendly feel with gentle hikes and an unbeatable foodie scene, while Paros offers sandy beaches and boutique shopping. Mykonos is more lively and better suited for older kids and teens, but families can still enjoy its whitewashed streets and enchanting pink Bougainvillaea iconic to the island. Wherever you choose, the Cyclades make it easy to balance downtime with local flavour.

Luxury Greece Family Holiday FAQs

Our luxury accommodation, experiences and tours are popular and can get booked up quickly during peak travel times, like school holidays. So we recommend booking your family holiday to Greece at least 6 months before. However, if you’re not constrained by school breaks, Greece can be one of the most flexible destinations for last-minute trips.

Greece enjoys warm, sunny weather for most of the year. In the summer months of June to August, temperatures are often in the high 30s and sometimes reach the 40s, which can be uncomfortable for some – especially if you're moving between several locations. Spring and autumn are typically a touch quieter, with slightly cooler temperatures, while the winter months are most suited to exploring the mainland as a lot of the islands close down. See our guide on the best time to visit Greece to help you plan your trip.
